Numbers Change, Results Don't, After Canvass of City of Bridgeport's 2017 Municipal Election Thursday

The totals changed for Bridgeport’s 2017 City election, but the outcome of the races remained the same following Thursday morning’s canvass of the results. City Clerk Andrea Kerr confirmed that everything went smoothly during the special meeting of Bridgeport City Council to handle the required canvassing of the election.

“It lasted about an hour and a half. It wasn’t a difficult process, but it’s a tedious process,” said Kerr. “You have to unlock the ballot boxes, organize everything, pass out items and then go through the required processes that include an explanation of the provisional ballots.”

Kerr said there were 20 provisional ballots as opposed to 19 that were reported on election night. The provisional ballots generally come from two sources – individuals moving within the city since the last election that vote at the wrong precinct and individuals who live outside the city, but have a city address that believe they are eligible to vote in the city election.

“Of the 20 provisional ballots, 14 of those were added to the final totals and fell in line with individuals simply voting at the wrong precinct, but who were eligible to vote,” said Kerr. “The other six came from those living outside the city limits. We see a handful of those at every city election.”

The final vote totals as based on all changes as a result of the canvass, as mentioned, did not impact the outcome of any race or change the order of finish in the three-seat Council race. The results of the election are up for certification as an item on Monday’s Bridgeport City Council agenda.
