Ongoing Johnson Avenue Hotel Project Being Done as Upgrade, Not Repair

Since late August, anyone driving along Interstate 79 near the Meadowbrook Mall exit – particularly on the northbound side – probably has noticed extensive work being done to the top of the Hampton Inn. The project, which had a building permit field back on August 21, has nothing to do with any problems to the structure, according to Bridgeport Community Development Director Randy Spellman.

“It’s basically an exterior façade project,” said Spellman. “They’re changing the roofline around the entire building to give it a few look.”

Spellman said the work being done is not a repair. Rather, he said it is an upgrade by the nationally known hotel chain.

“It is in line with standards established throughout the Hampton group,” said Spellman. “It’s not unusual to see a brand like a Hampton require their operators to meet certain upgrades and themes every so many years. When you see it happening, it’s usually a sign that the business is doing well. In this case, the Hampton Inn has remained open for business.”

Years ago, another major project on the Hampton Inn replaced the entire exterior. That project actually forced the closing of the Hampton Inn.

Spellman said the building permit calls the project currently being undertaken a “roof canopy.” The permit is for $4,100.
