Poll Results: Readers Weigh in on Whether City of Bridgeport Should Take over Waste Collection

By Jeff Toquinto on January 29, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The results are in from an unscientific poll on Connect-Bridgeport as it related to the picking up of waste for residents and businesses throughout Bridgeport. The question stemmed from a Jan. 12 Bridgeport City Council meeting where City Recorder Melissa Matheny suggested the city look into taking that service from Waste Management.

Matheny said her comments stemmed from what she described as a poor customer service encounter when calling on an issue as a resident, but concerns she said she fields from members of the community on a regular basis. Because of her concerns, the city said they would look into the feasibility of taking over waste pickup in Bridgeport.

And because of her concerns, a poll was posted on Connect-Bridgeport.com asking followers of the site their opinion on the matter. The question was posed as this: “Should Bridgeport Take Over Waste Pickup within the City?”

Several hundred individuals voted in the poll. The results showed that 58.8 percent of those voting said “no” to the question, while 41.2 percent responded “yes.”

Various comments were also tracked on Connect-Bridgeport.com’s social media components; primarily Facebook and Twitter. Comments there were fairly standard in that there were multiple individuals who never encountered issues with Waste Management and there were several who claimed to have a history of issues with the company.

While the poll may not have an impact on the city’s ultimate decision, officials from Waste Management have met with Bridgeport staff since the Jan. 12 meeting. The group will actually be in discussion with city officials at an upcoming work session of the Bridgeport City Council, according to City Clerk Andrea Kerr.

As for the poll, there is no way to determine if all those that responded were from Bridgeport. It is also unknown if individuals were able to clear their cookies to be able to vote multiple times.

The staff of Connect-Bridgeport.com would like to thanks those that took time to vote in this poll.
