Popular City "Shred-It" Day to Return for Seventh Time; Bridgeport Officials Say Event On for Saturday

For those wondering if there will be a seventh annual City of Bridgeport “Shred-It” day, you don’t have to wonder no more. City Clerk Andrea Kerr confirmed it's a go - and soon.

The event, which was reported earlier, will be held this Saturday, March 25 from 9 a.m. to noon; once again at the Bridgeport Municipal Complex. And once again, the event will be free to all City of Bridgeport residents.

Since the program began several years ago, Kerr said the goal was to provide an event that would prove beneficial for residents and would continue as long as it was utilized. The first six events have seen the truck filled to capacity every single time from community members looking to safely shred documents.

“The initial goal was to have two a year and see if they would work out and we would continue them. It’s worked out every year and we’re happy to announce the latest one that’s been scheduled,” said Kerr. “We wanted to see at first how it would work on Saturday and we’ve always had a great turnout so we’ve decided to keep it there.”

The event in March will be the first of 2017. The last one, in November of 2016, saw cars lined up well before the starting time. Cars continued to come and the truck was filled to capacity just as the noon completion time arrived.

“The one catch with this is that once the truck is filled then the event is over,” said Kerr. “That means it will last until noon or until the truck is filled up; whichever comes first. It’s generally been right before noon or right at noon when it gets filled up, but one of the events the truck was filled up around 11 a.m. and had to turn people away. We don’t want to do that, but we only pay for one truck so there’s nothing we can do.”

The cost of doing the shred-it event is $1,500. The project is funded under the city manager’s line item, said Kerr.

“If we keep filling trucks, we’ll keep having these events. I honestly believe it’s getting more popular because people call throughout the year on a pretty regular basis wanting to know when the next event is,” said Kerr. “People know and love this promotion.”
