Public Help with Media Assist Leads to Truck Doing Damage to Worthington Drive Contacting City Police

Another case solved thanks to the community members of Bridgeport and beyond. At least that’s according to Bridgeport Police Deputy Chief Randy Hartley.

Hartley said the department was contacted this morning in relation to damage done by a tractor trailer to a recently repaired section of Worthington Drive, as well as sidewalks at Simpson Elementary and the Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Now, Hartley said it appears that the repairs will be made by the part responsible for the damage.

“This was a situation where information that was put on line came back to help us get this taken care of,” said Hartley.

On Tuesday, a core drilling machine being pulled on tracks by a tractor trailer went down Worthington Avenue the wrong way from the traffic signal at the Philadelphia-Worthington intersection. City Engineer Beth Fox said as it headed down the one-way street the wrong way it became hung up trying to turn around, which led to the damage.

The truck managed to get back up Worthington, back on to Philadelphia and, according to Hartley, went back up Worthington and out through the Charles Pointe section of Worthington. Hartley said that was the same way the truck came in.

City Clerk Andrea Kerr forwarded images taken from surveillance footage at Simpson Elementary to Connect-Bridgeport and Fox asked if anyone could assist to please contact the Bridgeport Police Department. The method worked.

“The folks that received the delivery (of the core drilling machine) contacted the department and that same company notified the truck company that they needed to contact us as well,” said Hartley. “We have the information needed that the situation will be remedied.”

Hartley said the driver of the vehicle was apologetic and was “willing to take care of the damage.” According to Hartley, the driver said his GPS directed him into that area where the truck eventually became hung up.

As for the amount of damages, that’s yet to be determined. Hartley said that’s something Fox’s office will be able to determine.

“We appreciated the quick notification from Connect-Bridgeport and the fact the public was engaged enough to share the pictures that it eventually led back to us,” said Hartley. “We’re always grateful for public assistance.”
