Report: RadioShack to File for Bankruptcy; Mall Property Manager Says Bridgeport Site "Doing Well"

According to a report in CNNMoney, RadioShack is planning on filing for bankruptcy in February. This comes on the heels of an announcement almost a year ago that RadioShack was closing hundreds of stores nationwide. The article states RadioShack would not comment on the report.

Whether the new announcement – if true – will impact the store at Bridgeport’s Meadowbrook Mall is unknown. Last year’s announcement apparently did not impact the Bridgeport store, although the CNNMoney report stated that it had planned to close 1,100 of nearly 5,000 stores. As of date, only 175 have been closed, the report stated, due to the expense involved in closing stores.

Last year, local RadioShack employees directed calls to corporate. Corporate did not return calls last year.

Mall Property Manager Marcello Lalama said last year and today that he wasn’t aware of any issues with the location in Bridgeport. In fact, he said it appears to be doing well.

“It’s still doing well and we’ve had no notification from national about any problems with this location,” said Lalama. “That’s where we would get the information since it’s a national company and, to date, nothing has changed.”

What the bankruptcy will involve is an unknown. What is known is that there are two locations in Harrison County and both are still in operation – the one at the mall and one at Eastpointe in Clarksburg.

“I’ve not seen the numbers yet, so I don’t know for sure how they did for the Christmas holiday. I would assume they did well,” said Lalama. “I say that because it was a good year for the mall overall so, hopefully, we’ll have RadioShack with us for a long time.”
