Residents, Businesses, Civic Groups and More Asked to Help as City to Hold 2nd Annual Clean-Up Day

For the second year, the City of Bridgeport is asking the community to put their gloves on. On Wednesday, April 22, in honor of Earth Day, the Greater Bridgeport Convention & Visitors Bureau will be hosting a clean-up day at Hinkle and Deegan Lakes.

The event will begin at 6 p.m.

“Last year’s event was very successful for a fist-time event. Many groups came out and participated and we were surprised, unfortunately, with the amount of trash we picked up. It’s a shame that individuals can’t pick up after themselves, but it happens so we need to take care of them ,as the lakes are such a nice asset to the community.”

Last year, the GBCVB teamed up with Bridgeport Parks and Recreation and Waste Management to have the day at the lakes. The groups will team up once again this year.

“We removed 45 bags of trash last year,” said Duez.

There were more than 50 individuals that took part. Along with representatives from the city, there were multiple groups that participated. Duez said local scout troops, as well as representatives from various civic groups and individual families that participated.

The format last year will be the same as this year. Duez said individuals will be asked to work in small groups and have persons designated to pick up recyclables and others picking up standard garbage.

Outside of dressing appropriately to pick up trash and bringing gardening gloves, there is little else needed. Trash bags will be provided for those taking part.

“Anyone is welcome to participate. We’d like to challenge civic groups to come and assist as well as anyone on their own,” said Duez.

If the parking lot is full at the Main Shelter at Deegan Lake, parking is available in between the lakes on Lakeview Lane, Lion’s Point and by the dam at Hinkle Lake. Individuals can drive up and get their trash bags and disperse at various areas around the lake.

Once the bags are filled, they can be left along the trail areas and roadways. The bags will be picked up that day by staff of P&R and Waste Management.
