Shutout Win by Indians against Talented Keyser Squad Leaves Them on Top of MetroNews 'AA' Poll

Friday’s convincing 38-0 victory by Bridgeport over Keyser at Wayne Jamison Field did what one might expect it to do in this week’s MetroNews High School football power ratings. And that was leave Bridgeport at the top of the Class AA rankings.

The Indians not only remained at the top spot that they’ve held since the preseason poll, but they once again maintained the status as a unanimous ranking as the state’s top team in Class AA. Bridgeport received all 30 of the votes by members of a statewide media panel of writers and broadcasters.

Thanks to the win by Bridgeport, Keyser fell out of the top 10 for the first time this year. The Golden Tornado lost back-to-back games to fall to 5-2. Bridgeport is now 6-0-1.

Standing at the No. 2 spot is unbeaten Fairmont Senior. The Polar Bears went to Morgantown and upended Class AAA and winless University by a 49-20 score.

FSHS will visit Bridgeport Oct. 30. The Indians will be favored to be unbeaten heading into that game as they will visit North Marion Friday before having a bye week. The Polar Bears host 5-1 and No. 7 Jefferson this week at East-West Stadium.

The only other local team ranked in Class AA is Robert C. Byrd. The Eagles toppled East Fairmont 48-24 to move to 4-2. They will visit Keyser Friday in Mineral County with the winner likely to be in next week’s top 10 and the loser likely to be outside looking in.

After Fairmont Senior, Tolsia comes in at No. 3 with a 6-0 mark and Bluefield as at No. 4 with a 5-1 record. The Beavers are in the midst of a rare three-week stretch where they have back-to-back-to-back bye weeks.

The only other local team ranked is South Harrison. The Hawks made a huge jump in Class A after their 56-13 win over Webster County left them 4-0 and ranked No. 4. Last week, SHHS was No. 8. The Hawks visit Tyler Consolidated Friday.
