Construction activity was in full throttle in recent weeks at Bridgeport City Park. And it is good news for many that utilize the facility.

According to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Joe Shuttleworth, new features have been added that should assist those utilizing the football field features at the facility.

“The left side of City Park is traditionally our football field and one of that the field utilized were old soccer goals that had a goal post in them,” said Shuttleworth. “They were in bad shape and and we took them out.”

While the removal proved good from a safety standpoint, it created an issue. There were no longer goal posts that could be utilized by those taking advantage of the football field.

“The fields are used by the younger level of kids for training and they didn’t have a placing to practice field goals or point after kicks,” said Shuttleworth. “That’s no longer a problem.”

City crews dug holes and managed put a large anchor of concrete. Shuttleworth said barring something extremely unusual the poles should be just fine in the wind and weather situations. To make sure everything was done correctly, the city didn’t one side of the field at a time.

The total project comes with a near $5,000 price tag. Shuttleworth said about $4,000 of that was related to materials.

As for the project, it wasn’t a budgeted item. Instead, it came through the “Friends of the Park” account where funds go from sales of tickets to Kennywood and other regional theme parks that are sold each year as well as money donated to P&R for specific projects.
