Trio of Individuals, Including Pair from Bridgeport, Honored for Efforts in Ongoing Battle against Drugs

While many have only become in recent years of the ongoing battle against drugs in our region, state and beyond, for some in the law enforcement profession they’ve been up against it for years and, in many cases, decades. Last week, three individuals – including two from Bridgeport – were recognized for their efforts.

The West Virginia Narcotics Association honored the three individuals – former Drug Enforcement Administration head and West Virginia State Trooper State Lowell “L.J.” Maxey of Bridgeport, retired Wheeling Police Department officer Gary Gouce (who currently works at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District), and retired West Virginia State Trooper Gary Cooper, who is also from Bridgeport.

The three received the Association’s Vision Award that is given out to retirees who spend a majority of their career in law enforcement often in the line of drug investigation and various other areas of handling the drug culture that permeates our area. They were presented with their honor during the Association’s Annual Conference held last Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Bridgeport Conference Center.

“The three individuals that were recognized have made a lasting impact on efforts by law enforcement against drugs,” said the Commander of the Greater Harrison County Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force, who also is the president of the association. “I was fortunate to work with all three of them when I was younger. All three were crucial in the development of so many that are in the battle today. They were and still are considered legends in the world of drug investigations.”

Many of the names probably sound familiar. In particular, Maxey is currently a member of the Bridgeport City Council.
