Vandals Hit Section of Bridgeport City Pool During Memorial Day Weekend

While Bridgeport’s City Pool wasn’t open for business Saturday or Sunday, there was at least one unwelcome visitor that did some damage to the pool property over the Memorial Day Weekend. According to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton, when he arrived Sunday morning to check over the pool in consideration of opening up, he found something he wasn’t too pleased to find.

“I was doing basic inspection and was checking the restrooms to see if they were clean in the event we opened up for business,” Burton said. “I looked inside and, bam, there it was all over the place.”

What was all over the place in the family restroom that sits next to the concession stand was graffiti. Black and red spraypaint was covering the wall, the toilet seat and part of the mirror in the bathroom.

The only positive is that there was no damage done to break into the facility. However, there’s a reason for that. The bathroom in question is not locked as it is utilized by the public, including those utilizing the tennis courts and the walking trails.

“We’ve kept those open for years,” said Burton. “We do that as a service to those utilizing our amenities and this is the first time I’ve ever remembered having a problem.”

Burton said Bridgeport Police are investigating the matter. A police report was filed and he’s hoping someone perhaps saw something or someone may come forward with information. Individuals can contact P&R offices at 304-842-8240 with information, or they can also contact the Bridgeport Police Department.

“With labor and replacing some of the items, perhaps even the mirror, it could be between $200 and $300 damage,” Burton said.

Burton is hopeful to have the restroom facility back to normal in the next few days.
