An early afternoon accident on Interstate 79 destroyed a vehicle, but didn’t appear to result in any life threatening injuries to the occupant, Bridgeport Fire Department Captain Phil Hart said.

The accident took place prior to 2 p.m. today – the call to the Harrison County 911 log was at 1:49 p.m. – and involved a silver Toyota Camry. Bridgeport Police Department Lt. D.K. Betler said that the vehicle apparently lost control on I-79 just past the 122 mile mark in the northbound lane. The area was just past the exit to the Meadowbrook Mall.

“After the vehicle lost control, it hit the embankment and flipped two to three times,” said Betler.

Bridgeport Police and Fire personnel arrived quickly to the scene. Hart said although the report said the individual was entrapped that wasn’t the case. He said emergency service personnel were able to remove the occupant of the car and that individual was transported to United Hospital Center. The Harrison County Emergency Squad was also on the scene.

The incident backed up traffic, but didn’t bring it to a complete stop. The accident took place off the roadway, but emergency personnel used one lane of I-79 to address the situation safely. By 2 p.m., traffic was already beginning to move as the occupant of the car was on their way to UHC.

There was no word on what led to the incident as the investigation is in its very preliminary stages. Betler said the investigation is being handled by Officer J.M. Frenzel.
