Video: Watch 4 Million Cubic Yards of Earth Moved in 15 Months at Menards Charles Pointe Crossing Site

By Jeff Toquinto on February 22, 2022 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It was visible, for those with a quick eye or fortunate to be in the passenger seat of a vehicle, to those wondering about the massive construction on the northbound side of Jerry Dove Drive from the rest area to the Jerry Dove Drive exit.

It was visible, as well, to some who parked on the backside of the United Hospital Center or at the Physician’s Office Building on the UHC campus.

What was visible was work that began – physical work – on what will likely be a multi-million-dollar commercial development right off of State Route 279 known as Charles Pointe Crossing. And make no mistake, this is no small development that was able to be done quickly or cheaply.

The developers of Charles Pointe and Charles Pointe Crossing – Genesis Partners – teamed up with local entities Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) and Wolfe Excavating to undertake the moving of 4 million cubic yards of earth. Genesis Partners officials say the cost of the work comes in at nearly $30 million.

The project began in November of 2020. It took 15 months to complete. And below, you are going to see a time lapse video of the entire earth-moving project in video taken from United Hospital Center.

Moving earth, which included massive hillsides (featuring a 250-foot highwall at the development’s entrance that preserves the area’s mining heritage and displays Redstone and Pittsburgh coal seams), to a level that left a 67-acre site for new retail to serve Bridgeport, Harrison County, the region and beyond.

The main anchor for the site is Menards, a home improvement chain headquartered in Wisconsin, and it will have more than 203,000 square feet of retail space. Menards has expanded its footprint to include West Virginia with a site recently locating in Monongalia County.

“We’re hopeful to see construction start this year as the earth-moving project in general and Menards in particular has really been the talk of the city for the last couple of years. The completion of the earth work and the future start of construction is highly anticipated and the city is very excited about how this will improve the quality of life for the region,” said Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr.
