Weather System to Hit Area Bringing Everything from Snow to Rain; Hazardous Conditions Appear Likely

By Jeff Toquinto on February 20, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

A weather system coming from the south will collide with cold air already in the region and create what appears to be severe weather conditions through the early morning hours and then finish off with rain that could lead to even more problems.

“The heaviest, in relation to snow, will hit the area around 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” said WDTV Weather Anchor Colleen Campbell. “It will start as snow then switch to ice and sleet and eventually into rain.”

The snow could be anywhere from 1 to 3 inches. The problem will be compounded by the snow arriving with a pocket of cold air that could lead to issues during the morning commute for work.

“The snow will be a problem, but as it changes over it’s going to make things more dangerous during that travel time,” said Campbell.

Campbell said the changeover from snow could take place after 7 a.m. into sleet or freezing rain. She said that time people will definitely lead to “icy and slick conditions” that should be noted by anyone going out.

“People heading into work are going to have some problems and they need to be careful,” she said. “The roads will be very slick.”

Even the good news involving the system isn’t really good news. Warm temperatures expected to get into the 40s by early afternoon will switch the precipitation completely into rain in our region, although areas such as Pocahontas, Randolph and Nicholas County will continue to see snow and the ice/sleet combination through much of the afternoon.

That will wash away snow and the ice and sleet that may or will arrive. However, the rain will be significant.

“The rain will be persistent and not taper off until Thursday,” said Campbell. “We have a risk of flooding and there is also a chance of landslides.”

Campbell encourages people to check conditions and the weather forecast. Changes can occur regularly and you can see the latest by visiting WDTV’s weather page on their Web site by clicking HERE.
