By Savanna Draper on April 13, 2022 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Did you know that April is National Financial Literacy Month?

Financial Literacy Month is a nationally recognized campaign to bring awareness to the need for more financial education for both youths and adults. In 2004, the Senate passed a resolution to recognize April as Financial Literacy Month. Financial Literacy Month’s mission is to promote, advocate for, and support financial literacy efforts across the United States, especially in schools for children and teenagers. However, in recent years, this momentum has been applied to adult education as well.

The library has tons of resources you can utilize to increase your financial literacy. Whether you’re trying to learn about budgeting and saving, the ins and outs of investing in the stock market, retirement, financing a small business, or any other financial situation, we have a book that covers it. Some great comprehensive books to pick up if you want an overview include: The 250 Personal Finance Questions Everyone Should Ask by Peter J. Sander, Why Didn’t They Teach Me This in School? 99 Personal Money Management Principles to Live By by Cary Siegel, and The Index Card: Why Personal Finance Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated by Helaine Olen. As always, if you are looking for a book on a specific topic, don’t hesitate to ask our library staff!

The library is also now offering a brand-new database called Weiss Financial Ratings Series Online which is designed to introduce you to tools to protect your finances, invest wisely, grow your wealth, and learn more about your finances. This database allows you to search for financial institutions such as credit unions and banks and view their ratings, research insurance companies, view stock market information, and more. Anyone with a Bridgeport Public Library card can access this database. This database can be accessed by visiting our website at bplwv.org and clicking on “eResources.”

If you have questions about how to use it, please call us for assistance or stop by.
