Off the Shelf: Hundreds Involved in Soon-to-Wrap-Up Summer Reading Program; Still Time to Get Involved

By Savanna Draper on July 19, 2023 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

We officially have less than two weeks left of this year’s Summer Reading Program, All Together Now, but there are still ways to get involved and earn badges to be entered to win some really fun prizes! Before we get into what’s to come, let’s find out how the program has been going so far.

Since the Summer Reading Program began on June 1, 242 people have registered. Those 242 have also done a lot of reading and activities, in fact, 2,083 books have been logged! 588 activities have been logged, which means you have attended library programs (either at our library, Marion County Public Libraries, or Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library,) participated in the Community Scavenger Hunt, volunteered in your community, or turned in your canvas for the Tiny Art Show. We are so thankful for this year’s participants!

Even though the Summer Reading Program is coming to a close, the fun is not over yet! Participants can still complete their canvas to be a part of the Tiny Art Show which will be displayed in our front lobby through August. Participants may return to pick up their art at the beginning of September. Our sticker mural remains pinned up in the hallway. Please ask for a sticker at either of the desks to add to the mural to reveal a special surprise. When you finish reading a book, ask for a gear at the desk to be added to our display in the front lobby window. There’s also plenty of time to participate in the Community Scavenger Hunt featuring Bridgeport businesses!

There are also still opportunities to attend programs for children, teens, families, and adults. For children, teens, and families, attend Reading to Dogs on July 25, Affirmation Jars on July 18, Storytime on Wednesdays at noon, and Know Your City on July 20 and 27. For adults, attend Magic the Gathering Commander Night on July 19, Tea & Talk Mondays at 1 p.m., Hooks & Needles Wednesdays at 11 a.m., Dungeons & Dragons on July 26, and a matinee showing of A Man Called Otto on July 27. Roots & Readers, our multigenerational gardening club, will continue to meet Thursdays at 11 a.m. in our Community Garden. Attending any one of these programs earns you a badge to be entered to win prizes!

Lastly, our Summer Reading Program Finale will be held at Deegan & Hinkle Lakes Park on July 29 at 4 p.m. This evening will be packed with all-ages fun with games like cornhole, hula hoops, Simon Says (featuring our very own Simon the Sloth), water-balloon-a-librarian, and more. Those who prefer more relaxing activities can color, enjoy our summer music playlist, and play with the bubble maker. Light refreshments will be provided.

Feel free to drop in or leave at any time. In the case of rain, the Summer Reading Finale will be at the Bridgeport Public Library. The prize drawing for Summer Reading 2023: All Together Now will be held on Monday, July 31. No prizes will be given out at the finale.
