It’s finally Fall!

 

With the weather getting colder and the days getting shorter, what better time to curl up with a good book?

 

Personally, during Fall, I like to read books that are in the spirit of the season. Books full of Autumn imagery, small towns, family gatherings, and sometimes some spookier themes like haunted houses or witches. There are so many great books to read during this time of year!

 

The City Baker's Guide to Country Living by Louise Miller reads like a great Hallmark movie. This story takes place from Fall through Christmas. The main character leaves behind a fancy pastry chef job in Boston after a major blunder and visits her friend in a charming Vermont town and falls in love with it. After taking a job at a local inn, she befriends the townsfolk and starts falling for someone. The story features a Harvest dinner, a pie eating contest, and lots of Fall themes.

 

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Clare Lombardo is a rich and complex family drama with some Fall imagery. This story is told in sections by season. Main characters Marilyn and David fell in love in the 1970s but, by 2016, they have raised four very different daughters who each have their own sets of problems. This is a heartwarming story about family coming first in the face of adversity.

 

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is full of magical realism. The Night Circus arrives without warning. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is something to behold.

 

September by Rosamunde Pilcher contains rich descriptions of Autumn from the chill in the air to the changing colors of the leaves. This novel explores Scotland at the beginning of Fall, with themes like homecomings, friendships, betrayals, and love. It’s a novel you won’t forget after you’ve read it.

 

Small Town, Big Magic by Hazel Beck is the perfect book for someone who likes the intersection of magical realism and fantasy. Main character Emerson Wilde has built the life of her dreams. Owner of a bookstore and plenty of friends, nothing could be better. Until she finds out that she, and all of her friends, are witches. As she comes to terms with her newfound magic, the town is going to depend on her to keep it safe from other magical beings.
