Off the Shelf: Looking for Something to do in August? Library has More than 50 Programs Set for the Month

By Savanna Draper on August 02, 2023 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This August we are offering a slew of new programs for children, teens, families, and adults plus many regular favorites, 54 in total. As you are getting back into the routine of school and preparing for the fall, don’t forget to stop by the library and see what we have going on! Remember, our library offers much more than books, including a plethora of services like printing, faxing, notary services, eResources, and a wide variety of programs for all ages. Read on to see what programs you can look forward to this August.

Let’s begin with our programs for children, teens, and families! Every Wednesday at noon, meet us in our Children’s Department for an All-Ages Storytime (except for Wednesday, August 9.)  On August 4 at 5pm, we will host a Family Movie Night showing of Home. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. Play our Nintendo Switch for "Switch" It Up on August 5 at 11am, then stick around for Building Club at 12:30pm where Lego creations come to life. We will be hosting a special Back to School Bash on August 22 at 4pm. Come prepared to see all the library has to offer for children, teens, and families. Our very first Slime Lab will be on August 24 at 5pm. Finally, visit us on August 29 at 4pm for something you’ve never done before—Oobleck Exploration! Oobleck is a non-Newtonian liquid found in the 1949 book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss. Without any force, it acts like a liquid. It'll wiggle and jiggle and pour. However, when a force is applied, like if you tried slapping it or poking it, it would mimic a solid.

Now for our adult offerings… Our weekly handicraft group, Hooks & Needles meets every Wednesday at 11am. We are always looking for new members! On August 9 at 1pm our tech class for older adults, Tech Savvy will start back up with a session on how to protect yourself from scams and fraud. On August 17 at 5pm, join us for a session to learn about Budget, Debt & Credit Score. We will host a matinee showing of Cyrano on August 18 at 1pm. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. We will host an additional Tech Savvy class on August 23 at 1pm featuring mobile device basis. Also on August 23, join us for our Genealogy Roundtable at 5pm. Lastly, one of our monthly book clubs, Book Talk, will meet on August 24 at 4pm to discuss Remarkably Beautiful Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. Copies of this book are available at the library.

We also have some programs that are perfect for any age! Our weekly gardening group, Roots & Readers, meets on Thursdays at 11am in our Community Garden. Chess Club meets on Tuesdays at 3pm. Signing Made Easy, our monthly sign language class, will meet on August 15 at 5pm. This class is suitable for beginners.
