Off the Shelf: More Big News for the Bridgeport Public Library as Facility to Start Own Community Garden

By Savanna Draper on March 29, 2023 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Spring has definitely sprung at the Bridgeport Public Library because we have even more exciting news to share!

In addition to the unveiling of our new seed library, by early April, we plan to start our own community garden for our patrons to contribute to, learn about, and enjoy. We got some ideas and guidance from the WVU Extension Office to start this project. The library was lucky enough to have a patch of land near the backside of the library that was not being utilized and will be the home of our new garden.

City of Bridgeport Public Works Department did a wonderful job of helping us raze the area and free it of grass and tree roots. As soon as the weather clears up and we have a dedicated group of volunteers and Friends of the Library on board to help, we will begin preparation.

We will start by laying down a layer of weed-preventing tarp, building and filling five seven-foot raised garden beds with soil, compost, and seeds, and mulching the walkways to create a beautiful, thriving community garden for all to enjoy. We will also be adding some stepping stones and benches to the area. All gardening materials for this project have been purchased, now we just need some helping hands!

After the garden is initially set up, we will begin hosting weekly, all-ages gardening classes under the name Roots & Readers to plant seeds, pull weeds, water crops, and watch for pests. Gardening tools and gloves will be provided, but patrons are encouraged to bring their favorites from home. The garden beds will contain vegetables like lettuce, cucumber, squash, tomatoes, and herbs. We also plan on including a pollinator garden to attract beneficial insects to our growing crops with flowers such as marigolds and beebalm.

Patrons who regularly sign up and attend our Roots & Readers programs will have their first pickings in the garden when the plants are ready to harvest. Some of the vegetables may be used in upcoming library programs dedicated to cooking and seed saving. As this is the first year for the garden, rules and procedures may change as we learn what works and what doesn’t, but we plan to continue the garden year after year. If you are interested in helping us with this special project, please contact us at 304-842-8248. We look forward to growing with you!
