Off the Shelf: New Way to Get Involved with Library in Place with the Friends of Bridgeport Public Library

By Savanna Draper on March 08, 2023 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Bridgeport Public Library is excited to announce a new way to get involved with the library—Friends of BPL!

Friends of BPL will be comprised of a group of library lovers dedicated to helping the Bridgeport Public Library achieve its goals. They will volunteer their time, skills, and expertise to help the library during special programs and events, they publicly support and advocate for the library's mission and goals, and they wish to see the library succeed and function as an active part of that success. The Friends actively support the Bridgeport Public Library in its mission to meet the personal, educational, cultural, and professional information needs of the library community. Friends of BPL will be led by our Adult Services Coordinator, Angela.

There is no cost to become a Friend of BPL. All we require is that you are at least 18 years old and have an active library card in good standing. Aside from those requirements, interested individuals must be able to devote a few hours a month to meetings and special projects. We have several exciting projects and events coming up that you could be a part of!

We have some potential projects in mind including assisting in the facilitation of library events like the annual Summer Reading Program, creating a Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library Cookbook, helping to maintain the future library community garden and Seed Library, preserving library history, spearheading special holiday projects, holding art exhibits, attending community outreach events on behalf of the library, and any other projects thought up by the Friends.

Of course, there will be some fun perks that come along with being a Friend of BPL. Some of these could potentially include Book Sale vouchers, appreciation dinners, raffles, library-branded gear and apparel, meeting other volunteer-minded individuals, and helping to build a more literate, informed, and connected community.

We are currently accepting membership applications!

All of this information and more, plus a link to the application can be found on our website bplwv.org/friends. We also have paper brochures and applications available at the library. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Angela at 304-842-8248 or aspatafore@bridgeportwv.com. Our first meeting will be on Monday, March 13th at 4:00 PM.
