Off the Shelf: November is Busy for Start of Holiday Season at Library, and Plenty of Things Scheduled

By Savanna Draper on November 09, 2022 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

There are a lot of new things going on inside the library, including new displays for November! November is a special month with plenty of variety. Since it’s the start of the holiday season, family is a big theme this month, and it also happens to be National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo!). Read below to discover some of our special library displays this month.

Keeping in the theme of families, we have a display set up in our front lobby titled Family is a Forest. This display celebrates all the different ways a family grows together even when its members are not grown from the same tree. This display also highlights the greater global community as a family. Many of the selected titles include themes of compassion and building strong familial foundations. Some adult and young adult titles include The Bright Side of Disaster by Katharine Center, The Shape of Family by Shilpi Somaya Gowda, and Home is Not a Country by Safia Elhillo. Some children’s titles include Stuart Little by E. B. White, The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Savage Carlson, and Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Mailard.

November is National Novel Writing Month, and everyone has a story to tell. Our new adult display, Share Your Story, has a selection of books all about writing, publishing, and marketing your story. Selected titles include Becoming a Writer, Staying a Writer: The Artistry, Joy, and Career of Storytelling by J. Michael Straczynski, The Lie That Tells a Truth: A Guide to Writing Fiction by John Dufresne, You Can Write Children's Books by Tracey E. Dils, Showing & Telling: Learn How to Show & When to Tell for Powerful & Balanced Writing by Laurie Alberts, and The Professionals' Guide to Publishing by Gill Davies. Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the Author Meet and Greet on Monday, November 14th from 4:00-6:00 PM to meet a group of authors who have all shared their stories.

We are still holding our Global Reading Challenge! This month we're headed to Southeast Asia. Featured countries include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Adult selections include The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, On Fragile Waves by E. Lily Yu, What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo, and The Good Girls: An Ordinary Killing by Sonia Faleiro. Children's titles include Eyes That Kiss the Corners by Joanna Ho, Girl Giant and the Monkey King by Van Hoàng, and All Thirteen by Christina Soontornvat.
