Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Program Ready to Go

By Savanna Draper on May 17, 2023 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Our Summer Reading Program is just around the corner! The theme this year? All Together Now: Kindness/Friendship/Unity. The library is using this theme as an opportunity to highlight how both Bridgeport's (and the surrounding area's) citizens, businesses, and organizations work together to form a thriving community. We are working with several area businesses and organizations to host a Community Scavenger Hunt throughout the Summer Reading Program, so please stay tuned for more details to come.

The Summer Reading Program will begin June 1st and run through July 31st. Like last year, reading logs and program participation will be tracked entirely online through Beanstack’s website or the Beanstack mobile app. There is also no preregistration this year, but registration will open on Beanstack on June 1st.  If you need help getting signed up or have questions about Beanstack, feel free to reach out to us.

Patrons can look forward to revitalized programs like Roots & Readers, our multi-generational gardening club, which will meet every Thursday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM to help in our community garden and learn more about gardening. Our All-Ages Storytime will also be returning on Wednesdays at 12:00 PM. We will continue to offer our All-Ages Chess Club on Tuesdays at 3:00 PM. Keep an eye out for very special programs featuring some of the City of Bridgeport’s Departments coming to present how they all work together to keep our City in top shape.

We will be offering new craft programs for adults including Crochet for Beginners on Monday, June 12th from 5:00-7:00 PM where patrons will learn how to make a simple dishcloth, Seed Ball Making on Thursday, June 15th from 4:00-5:00 PM where patrons will make wildflower seed balls you can toss in your garden to help your local pollinators, Kumihimo Woven Chains on Friday, June 16th from 4:00-5:00 PM where patrons will weave together string to make beautiful chains you can turn into bracelets, keychains, lanyards, and more, and Book Folding Hearts on Monday, July 3rd from 5:00-7:00 PM where patrons will learn the art of book folding by starting with a simple heart pattern.

We'll also be inviting patrons to submit work for a Tiny Art Gallery. A small canvas will be included in each participation tote for patrons who sign up for the Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Finale will be on July 29th at Deegan and Hinkle Lakes Park. Many details of our Summer Reading Program are still being finalized, so please check our website, bplwv.org/events for the most up-to-date information!
