Off the Shelf: Take Some Stress of Heading Back to School Off by Utilizing City Library's Resources

By Savanna Draper on August 17, 2022 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The new school year is just around the corner. It is normal for children (and parents) to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure during this time, especially if they’re starting at a new school or going to school for the first time. However, it’s also a time of excitement and new beginnings!

As school starts, there’s no better time to add visits to the library into your routine. We have books and resources to help with schoolwork, studying, and leisure reading. We also have books that will help ease everyone into the back-to-school mindset.

Mindfulness at School by Amber Bullis is great book to equip your child with. In this book, early readers will learn about mindfulness and discover how easily it can be applied to their daily lives and school days. Social and emotional learning concepts support a growth mindset throughout, while activities and goals at the end of the book further reinforce the content. It also includes sidebars, a table of contents, glossary, index, and tips for educators and caregivers.

The Exceptionally, Extraordinarily Ordinary First Day of School by Albert Lorenz is a fun, light read for young readers. On the first day back to school from summer vacation, John is the new kid. When the librarian asks him if the school is any different from his last one, he begins a wildly imaginative story about what it was like. What follows are hilarious scenarios—his old school bus was a safari jeep pulled by wild creatures, the school was a castle, and the lunch menu included worms! His imagination wins him the attention and awe of his librarian and peers, setting the tone for a compelling story about conquering the fears of being a new kid, as well as the first-day jitters that many children experience.

Middle School is Worse than Meatloaf: A Year Told Through Stuff by Jennifer L. Holm was one of my favorite books when I was in middle school! The book follows Ginny, who has ten items on her big to-do list for seventh grade. None of them, however, include accidentally turning her hair pink. Or getting sent to detention for throwing frogs in class. Or losing the lead role in the ballet recital to her ex-best friend. Or the thousand other things that can go wrong between September and June. But it looks like it's shaping up to be that kind of a year! It’s the story of one girl's worst school year ever—told completely through her stuff.
