For those wondering why the entrance to Bridgeport City Park was closed this morning, there’s a good reason for it. In fact, it’s a reason that should make the already highly utilized venue more agreeable to users.

This morning, several vehicles, as well as a large crane from Capital City Crane out of Columbus, Ohio, were at the recreational venue. The group arrived to install the prefabricated new concession stand that sits between the ball fields at the complex.

“To make sure they vehicles and the crane had plenty of room to operate, the parking lot was closed off last night,” said Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton. “The trucks arrived this morning around 7 a.m., which was done so that they would beat the student traffic that would be arriving in the morning at the high school and the other school complexes.”

Once inside Bridgeport City Park, there was a minor issue involving the one flatbed truck that was involved in the moving of the building. The area where the paved trail dips off from the parking lot bottomed out a bit and the truck was stuck.

“They jacked up the flatbed and were able to back it up to where they needed everything to go to get ready to lift the concession stand up and move it,” said Burton.

In order to help make the new concession stand ready for placement, city staff began preparation of the site in April. The ground was cleared, a foundation was put in place and utilities were readied for the 10x26 structure, which because of its concrete roof, is basically maintenance free.

The building was done by CXT. They had the low bid on the project at $65,602.

Part of the building will include storage for Bridgeport Parks and Recreation. The rest of the building will be utilized by the various youth organizations that includes soccer, softball, baseball and other sports and activities at the complex.

“It was pretty impressive how quickly this was done. The crane basically swung around, the building was attached and it was picked up and placed over top of the area that was already prepped,” said Burton. “It was, probably, about 15 to 20 minutes from picking it up to setting it down.”

The interior still needs to have items put in place that those utilizing the facility can use for food sales. However, those items are already in and Burton said he anticipates the building being ready for use sometime next week.
