Despite Poor Weather, Bridgeport Parks and Rec Handles Upkeep to Popular Sand Volleyball Court

For Bridgeport Parks and Recreation, worrying about the weather isn’t an option when it comes to getting facilities ready for activity or keeping them up to date so that activities can continue. Last week, was a case in point as the sand volleyball court near the playground at the Benedum Civic Center playground and basketball court.

“We do this about every other year,” said P&R Director Don Burton. “The sand we bring in is similar to what you have on golf courses; it’s white bunker sand. There is no glass in it, which is what you find when you have sand used for concrete.”

Burton said the sand was delivered last week. It comes from Tri-Star Trucking out of Bruceton Mills.

The need for the sand arises based solely on the usage of the court, which used to be located directly in front of the swimming pool. Burton said the sand simply gets kicked out of the court area and spread around the ground. He said many would be surprised how much sand is moved out of the area over the course of a year or two.

“This year, we’ve put in about 25 tons of sand,” said Burton. “It’s a very good outdoor playing surface.”

Like everything else on the recreation front, weather has impacted the usage this season. Burton said it’s down significantly from recent summers.

“With all the rain, there’s just not that much use,” said Burton. “When the weather has cooperated this year, there’s usage of it like there always is. We actually have several groups come in from Clarksburg that compete and we have plenty of local residents that play as well on the court. It’s just not been the same this year because of the weather.”
