According to Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton, his office was contacted by a city resident that claims to have spotted a bear at Bridgeport City Park. The bear was reported as being seen earlier this morning.

Burton and P&R Deputy Director Joe Shuttleworth headed to the scene, but there were no visible signs of any bear. However, that doesn't mean a bear isn't in the area.

"I'm pretty sure we had a bear come through here a few years ago and, as you know, we've had several bears being reported in the area over the last few years so it's not completely unusual," said Burton.

In fact, last year a large bear was spotted multiple times (pictured right) along Main Street, including the Burnside Funeral Home.

The bear was reportedly spotted near the walking trail on the backside of City Park near Woodside Heights. It was in an area along the multiple recreational fields that area in that area.

"As of now, we have a single report and we're taking it seriously," Burton said. "Right now, we'd advise everyone to be very cautious and to avoid any wildlife they may come upon."

Burton said the Bridgeport Police have been notified. In the past, Division of Natural Resource personnel have also advised those who encounter a bear to remove themselves from the area as soon as possible to avoid any problems.

If anyone else witnesses a bear in the area, Burton advises then to contact the Bridgeport Police Department. They can be reached at 304-842-8260.
