Another sure sign that spring is at hand arrived between late morning near Bridgeport City Park and early this afternoon. Early this afternoon, Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton said he was notified that not one, but two bear cubs were seen on the walking trail at the recreation facility.

Unlike many reports in the past, this time Burton had pretty solid proof. A crystal clear photo was sent to him showing the two cubs.

“These bears were seen about 1 p.m. today on the City Park trail between City Park and Virginia Avenue,” Burton said. “They were closer to the City Park side of the trail.”

The picture was sent to Burton by Amy Maxey. Maxey said the bears were spotted by and picture taken by Stephanie Phillips on the trail.

In recent years, bear sightings have been frequent throughout and around Bridgeport. DNR officials have warned that if spotted it is best to go in the opposite direction. With bear cubs, the possibility of the mother bear being close by is also highly likely, DNR officials have said.

Mother bears are very protective. Last year, a woman in Morgantown was attacked by a bear.

Burton is asking everyone using the city trails to please exercise caution. If individuals spot a bear, please contact 911 to let officials know where they are located.
