The Bridgeport High School baseball program will hold one of its biggest fundraisers of the year Saturday, Sept. 29. At that time the 5th annual golf tournament “A Round for the Reservation” will be held at the Bel Meadow Country Club.

The event will begin with an 8 a.m. breakfast and a 9 a.m. shotgun start in a four-man scramble format. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team. Money will also be raised by selling mulligans and a 50/50 drawing. Prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin will also be given out.

BHS Baseball Coach Robert Shields is asking individuals interested in participating to contact Rick Johnson (304-669-0685) or Robert Marra (304-669-1979). Shields said the tournament is important and also a good time.

Individuals can contact those same individuals if interested on being a corporate sponsor for $300, which included a four-team player entry and a hole sponsorship. There is also a chance for businesses or individuals to pay $100 to sponsor a hole and a “Tribe Sponsor” category has been added for a donation of any amount to help the effort.

The effort, in this case, are improvements to the BHS baseball field. The complex has seen hundreds of thousands of dollars in improvements during Shields’ 30-plus years with the program.

“We’ve done a lot of major projects and money this year will likely be utilized for the upkeep of the field,” said Shields, who utilized the funds for the last few years to assist with putting in a sprinkler system. “There a things you run into that may need fixed that you don’t want to have to utilize the general account at the school or to ask for donations from the community.”

While the sprinkler system is finished, Shields said other areas are going to need attention soon. Some of the items include some new fencing, backstop netting and the ongoing laser grading of the baseball field surface.

“The community has always supported this tournament and they’ve also helped with donations through the years to make this field top of the line,” said Shields. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it and we certainly would encourage anyone that has followed us to come out and participate in a day of golf.”
