BHS Boys Still Near Top of AP Prep Basketball Poll; Girls Remain in Top 10 Despite Recent Setback

Bridgeport’s boys and girls basketball teams continue to receive respect from across West Virginia – at least according to the most recent Associated Press Poll that is out.

The Indians’ boys’ team is still ranked No. 2 in the latest Class AA AP rankings. The Tribe trails undefeated Poca in the rankings. The Dots are 12-0, while Bridgeport is 11-0 heading into tonight’s home game with Elkins. Poca received all 10 of the first place votes in the poll.

Plenty of familiar teams are in the top 10. Fairmont Senior, 13-0, is ranked at No. 3, followed by Westside (10-1) and Robert C. Byrd (7-4) rounding out the top five, respectively. Lincoln (11-1), which suffered its first loss last week against Grafton, is ranked No. 6, followed – in order – by Scott (8-4), Mingo Central (9-5), Ravenswood (9-3) and Sissonville (9-4). The Bearcats are the only team receiving votes that did not make the top 10.

The top four teams remained the same in this week’s poll. The Eagles of RCB were the big movers as they went from the No. 8 spot up three positions.

South Charleston is No. 1 in Class AAA, while Morgantown is ranked No. 3 Preston, who is on the upcoming BHS slate, is ranked No. 9 and stands at 11-2.
In Class A, Notre Dame is ranked No. 6. The Fighting Irish are 9-5 on the year.

Bridgeport’s girls’ team lost Saturday to George Washington on the road and fell to11-4 on the year. However, the setback didn’t prove too costly in the ratings. The Tribe only fell one spot from No. 9 to No. 10.

Wyoming East is No. 1 in the poll at 13-0 and received nine first place votes. North Marion is 12-1 and ranked No.2. The Huskies’ sole loss on the year came at the hands of the Indians. Fairmont Senior, 13-2, is ranked No. 3 and has the other first place vote.

Sissonville (12-2) is No. 4 and Summers County (11-2) is No. 5. The remainder of the top 9 – in order – is Keyser (13-1), Clay County (13-2), Ravenswood (14-1) and Pikeview (9-3).

In Class AAA, Big 10 foe Buckhannon-Upshur is ranked at No. 10 and stand at 10-3 on the year. In Class A, Notre Dame's 8-4 mark has them listed as the No. 8 team.
BHS will look to add to its win total Wednesday. The Tribe travels to Randolph County to face Elkins in a 6 p.m. contest.

The AP Poll is chosen by a panel of sports writers from across the state.
