Efforts to make athletic facilities utilized by Bridgeport High School aren’t just limited to those inside the gates of Wayne Jamison Field. Currently, efforts are continuing to improve the softball field utilized by BHS, Bridgeport Middle School and the Bridgeport Softball Recreational League located behind BMS.

To help raise some of those needed funds, the Bridgeport High School Softball Boosters will be holding a golf tournament Friday, August 14 at the Bel Meadow Golf Club. The event will begin at 1 p.m., feature a shot gun start and be in a four-person scramble format.

The cost to participate is $60 per player. The cost covers a round of golf, a post-event meal and prizes. There will also be team prizes, and prizes awarded for the longest drive and closest to the pin. Individuals or businesses can also help by sponsoring a hole for $100.

Money raised will be utilized to help upgrade the field’s condition as well as the maintenance equipment needed for the complex. According to information submitted to Connect-Bridgeport.com, work on the field has been progressing for some time to make sure that upgrades continue.

In September of 2014, S&S Processing of Pittsburgh was brought in to completely renovate the field. Also recently done for purposes of keeping the field up to standards was the acquisition of a used lawn tractor; the cleaning and painting of dugouts, bathrooms and concessions; the purchase of French drains, top soil and gravel to address drainage woes near the first base and right field lines.

The information provided said that $18,000 was in raised through fundraising by the BHS softball team in 2014 for those projects. A letter explaining the status of the field and facilities pointed to donation from the high school, businesses and parents. Now, to complete the rest of the work that is needed those involved with the program are estimating that $5,200 needs to be raised.

Among the items that would be addressed partially through funds raised by the golf tournament include the outfield grass being overhauled, building a commons area near the dugouts along with walkways from the dugouts to the batter’s circle need built, along with field maintenance items. The top item includes a proper drag for purchase.

Along with the golf tournament, the boosters are also seeking contributions to help support the effort. Donations of $500 or more will be recognized at the field. If you are interested in contributing, contact Jay Layne at 304-672-0377 for information on sending a check.

For those wanting to participate in the golf tournament, contact Layne at the above number as well. Individuals can also call Chuck Carr at 304-629-5042.
