BHS Students Planning on Attending 'AA' Boys State Tourney Game Need Parents to Sign them Out

Bridgeport High School Principal Mark DeFazio has a message for parents and students who plan on attending Wednesday’s Class AA boys’ state tournament basketball quarterfinal between Bridgeport and Chapmanville.

If your child is attending BHS and plans on going to the 1 p.m. game at the Charleston Civic Center, there is a protocol that has to be followed.

DeFazio said parents or guardians of any student planning on attending will have to come to the school to sign their child out of school to attend the game Wednesday. DeFazio said parents can come to the school during regular hours or before school opens on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

“They will only be dismissed if a parent comes and signs them out. We want them to attend and hope to see a lot of kids there, but a parents absolutely has to sign them out for that to happen,” said DeFazio.

For those with work schedules that may conflict. DeFazio said he will be at the school at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for anyone that wants to come in early. For others, he said, they will have to find time to make an appearance in person to sign their child out.

“We will not accept phone calls nor will we accept a note,” said DeFazio. “I’m very much aware that it can be an inconvenience to parents that work, but they came come in early to get around that.”

DeFazio said there’s a reason for having parents handling the signing out process.

“I don’t want to be the one giving the permission for kids to ride with another student. When a child is dismissed to their parent then their parent can determine how they will be getting to the game,” said DeFazio.

The BHS administration has already provided information to students to pass forward to parents. He also said those signing out and getting tickets will have to check in with himself or Assistant Principal Matt DeMotto in Charleston.

Personal transportation will be the only way for students to get to the game. There will be no bus to the contest.

Also on Tuesday, advance tickets will be sold to students and to the public. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets can do so at the school. Student tickets are $6 and others for general admission are $8. All tickets are $8 at the Charleston Civic Center. Tickets will be sold Tuesday during lunch hour from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
