BHS, Top 5 in Class AA Remain Status Quo in MetroNews Football Rankings

By Jeff Toquinto on September 02, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

With the first week of high school football action in the books, there is no change among the top four teams in the MetroNews.com power ratings. Following Bridgeport’s 38-7 home- and season-opening win over Buckhannon-Upshur, the Indians remained at No. 2 in the rankings.

Wayne remained the number one team in Class AA. The Pioneers handled Tolsia by a 40-18 score with names that are familiar to BHS leading the way. Quarterback Grant Ferguson threw for 245 yards and Mason Hodge rambled for 135 yards on just seven runs.

Bluefield is in the third spot after an absolute shootout with Graham, Va. The Beavers wono the game 76-48. Robert C. Byrd remained at No. 4 following a solid 28-7 win over No. 9 Fairmont Senior. The Eagles will meet Liberty at One Eagle Way Friday.

Sissonville, the preseason No. 5 team, remained there. SHS defeated Chapmanville 42-14.

The Indians will receive a major test this week. The Tribe will travel to battle Class AAA No. 6 Wheeling Park. The Patriot upended Taylor Allderdice out of Pennsylvania by a 30-13 score. WPHS made up for the loss of injured star running back Savion Johnson by having his replacement – Theo Blackston – run for a school record 296 yards.

The poll is done by a panel of 25 radio broadcasters and sports writers from the state.  Unlike the WVSSAC rankings that will come out in a few weeks, these rankings have no impact on preseason standings.
