BHS Top-Ranked Class AA Team in Daily Mail Poll; No. 2 in MetroNews Ranking

By Jeff Toquinto on September 29, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

As the season hits the midway point for many teams in the 2014 prep football season, postseason posturing is taking place. Tomorrow, the WVSSAC poll will come out and it appears the Indians will be moving up in the poll that determines postseason positioning.

In the two statewide polls that don’t have an impact on the postseason and aren’t based on computer rankings, Bridgeport is standing strong. In fact, the Indians maintained their number one Class AA spot in the Charleston Daily Mail Poll.

BHS received five of the eight first place votes for 77 points. Bluefield is second with 75 points and three first place votes.

Rounding out the top five are Wayne at three, Frankfort at four and Ravenswood at the fifth spot. BHS’s Oct. 10 foe Keyser comes in at number six.

Also today, the MetroNews.com power poll is out and the Indians have maintained their ranking at the second-ranked team in Class AA. Bridgeport received two of the 25 first place votes in the poll with Bluefield receiving all but one of the others.

The Beavers maintained the top spot after defeating Greenbrier East by a 55-26 score. They will be back in action this week at Richlands, Va.

Bridgeport was able to maintain its position thanks to a 41-0 hammering of East Fairmont. The Indians will look to enhance or boost its position this week with a rare Thursday evening game at Elkins in the Forest Festival bowl.

Rounding out the top five is Wayne (3-1) at the third spot, Frankfort (5-0) in the fourth position, and Ravenswood (4-0) coming in at the five spot. The Falcons, who will visit Mountain Ridge in Maryland, received the other first place vote.

As mentioned above, Bridgeport’s Oct. 10 foe – Keyser – is also in the top 10. The Golden Tornado stands at 4-1 after a 21-10 win over Allegany, Maryland Friday. This week, KHS will host Hampshire. Rounding out the top 10 is BHS foe Robert C. Byrd. The Eagles cracked back into the rankings after manhandling homestanding Grafton by a 43-7 score.

The MetroNews rankings are voted upon each week by 25 radio broadcasters and sports writers across the state. Click HERE for that poll.
