Even with the weather not being fully cooperative, Bridgeport High School’s baseball team managed to grab three wins in three games heading into action Friday. Most notable of the wins came Thursday evening when the Indians upended Liberty in a Big 10 Conference showdown.

The Tribe topped the Mountaineers by a 6-2 score among conference leaders. The game was stopped in the middle of the sixth inning due to inclement weather that swept through and pounded the area.

BHS’s win against Liberty came on the heels of two other victories. The Tribe toppled homestanding Preston on Monday by an 8-3 score and then came back Wednesday with a 13-5 win against Lewis County.

Bridgeport now stands at 14-4 overall. The Tribe is 9-1 in the Big 10 Conference, with the only loss coming in the season-opening game against Grafton.

“Our approach at the plate after the start of the week is better because we’re buckling down. It’s the stretch run and we have one week left. We’ve got big games today and a we have a big week in front of us next week,” said BHS Coach Robert Shields.

Against the Mountaineers, the Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and we’re still in control into the sixth inning with Gordon Swiger having a strong outing on the mound. Swiger allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out five. The best news for the hurler was that he did not walk a batter.

BHS managed six hits, but combined that with five walks to get its early advantage that stood up. Drew Hefner was in the zone as he went 3-for-3 in the game. Jared Cleghorn had the game’s only extra base hit with a double.

On Wednesday, the Bridgeport pitching was good, allowing just five hits in a seven-inning, 13-5 win over the Minutemen. However, the Tribe needed a potent offense to overcome 12 walks that were allowed by the staff. Despite that, Haden Miller picked up the in as he went the first four frame with three runs allowed on just one hit and eight walks against five strikeouts.

Bridgeport managed to pound out 10 hits and drew seven walks in piling up its offense. Hefner, Elijah Drummond and Ross Marra all had two-hit games, with Hefner and Marra’s totals including doubles. Joseph Dodrill also added a double, while Brine Takahashi finished with a triple.

On Monday, BHS jumped out to a 7-0 lead before holding on for an 8-3 win in Kingwood. Joseph Cain picked up the win with five innings of work that included allowing three runs on three hits and four walks. He also struck out eight.

The Indians again had 10 hits in the contest. Hefner, who didn’t cool down the rest of the week, had two hits along with Drummond once again. Takahashi had a double and Miller added a triple in the victory.

Bridgeport is on the road at Class AAA power and No. 1-ranked Jefferson today. The Indians will be playing a doubleheader.
