Bridgeport Finishes Regular Season as Unanimous Top-Ranked 'AA' Baseball Team in Daily Mail Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on May 12, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It took a while – all of the regular season in fact – for everyone to agree, but in the final Charleston Daily Mail prep baseball poll Bridgeport came out as the state’s unanimous No. 1-ranked Class AA team. The Indians, who have jumped back and forth and shared first place votes with Chapmanville much of the season, earned all of the first place votes in the season’s final poll.

The Tribe captured all six of the votes from a panel of statewide sports journalists. The Indians totaled 60 points to maintain the first place position, while CHS was second with 50 points.

A trio of North Central West Virginia teams also made the final top 10 in Class AA. East Fairmont at No. 4, Lincoln and No. 8 and Fairmont Senior at No. 9 all earned votes in the last poll of the year.

In Class A, Notre Dame finished the year as the top-ranked team. The Fighting Irish have been frontrunners ever since last year’s down-to-the-wire state title game setback and has played a fiercely competitive schedule.

Jefferson, a team Bridgeport toppled earlier this year, finished the year as the top-ranked team in Class AAA. Washington, another team the Indians upended on their way to a 28-2 regular season, is in the No. 8 spot.

Although the poll shows the respect state media outlets have for the BHS program, it has no bearing on the postseason. The wins by the Tribe, however, did earn them a first round bye in this week’s sectional tournament that begins Thursday. The Indians will host the winner of the Lincoln-Robert C. Byrd game at a time yet to be announced.
