It wasn't the result they were hoping for, but it was still an impressive day for the Bridgeport High School cross country program. The Bridgeport boys finished in second place and the girls came in third in the Class AA-A state championship meet at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.

The boys were hoping to add a fourth state championship to their fold, but came up short to Fairmont Senior. The boys were led by Jackson Jacobs who came in third overall, Cade Robinson who was fifth in the overall standings and Bailey DeMoss who was seventh overall.

“Jackson and Cade and Bailey all did fantastic. They all m oved up from their predicted spots … and did great,” said BHS Coach Jon Griffith. “For us to beat them, we had to have a perfect day and we didn’t. We had to two great teas battle it out and we just couldn’t get over the hump.”

For the girls, Emerson Grafton oncea again led the way. Grafton finished the race in eighth place in the large field.

“Emerson was great and earned her eighth-place finish,” said Griffith. “The rest of the girls ran pretty solid races from top to bottom. It turned out and predicted and expected.”

Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior were considered among the two favorites to win the meet according to the Web site Runwv.com. The girls, although not favored to win it, were listed among the top five. The Polar Bears won the state championship.

Frankfort finished third in the boys. Fairmont Senior also won the girls event, while Winfield finished in second place

Four Bridgeport runners earned all-state status as a result of their showings. Grafton was named all-state for the girls, while the trio of Jacobs, Robinson and DeMoss earned the honors for the boys.

"The reality is there’s only one team that can finish in the top spot and Class AA is a tough field. It’s just a strong division and to be consistently in the upper echelon is a positive,” said Griffith. “I’m extremely proud of the boys and girls.”
