Changes in Class AA Top 10 MetroNews Football Poll, but Indians Position Same after Win over Elkins

By Jeff Toquinto on October 15, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

A second straight convincing win by Bridgeport has it right where it’s been for the last several weeks in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings. Once again, the Indians check in as the fifth-ranked team in Class AA.

That’s where a panel of statewide radio broadcasters and sports writers have the Tribe. Eighteen media members vote in the poll.

Bridgeport maintained its spot following its convincing 35-0 victory Friday against Elkins. It was the final regular season home game of the 2018 season for BHS.

Fairmont Senior, who blasted Preston by a 64-0 score, remained No. 1. However, the 8-0 Polar Bears managed to become a unanimous choice for the first time this season.

A big reason for Fairmont getting all 18 first place votes stems from Bluefield suffering its first loss of the season. The Beavers fell by a 17-3 score to Lord Botetourt (Va.) to fall to 6-1.

After Bluefield and ahead of Bridgeport there were changes in the top five. Point Pleasant, at 6-0 following a 55-13 win against Meigs (Ohio), moved from No. 4 to No. 5. Poca, who had a bye week, fell to the No. 4 spot and are currently 7-0.

Bridgeport’s next opponent is ranked No. 7 this week. Keyser remained in the position following a 33-20 win against Allegany (Md.). The two teams square off in Mineral Wells Friday at 7 p.m.

Robert C. Byrd remains at No. 9. The Eagles were off this past week, but will return to action Friday with a visit to Liberty.

No other local teams are in the Class AA top 10. Grafton, however is in the “also receiving votes” potion of the poll.

Doddridge County remained at No. 3 in Class A. The Bulldogs blanked Ravenswood by a 38-0 score.
