Changes in MetroNews Class AA Football Standings Top 5, but Tribe Stays Put after Victory over RCB

After bouncing back from last week’s heartbreaking loss to Fairmont Senior with a convincing 34-20 win at Robert C. Byrd Friday, Bridgeport remained No. 5 in the Class AA portion of the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings.

The Tribe, which had been No. 3 from the preseason until last week, found themselves in familiar territory. However, there were a few changes in front of them.

Mingo Central remained No. 1 in the rankings and gained all but one of the first place votes with 29 of the 30 votes cast for the Miners, who are 5-0 after a 62-8 hammering of Poca. The poll is voted on by 30 radio broadcasters and sports writers statewide.

Fairmont Senior remained No. 2 in the polls. The Polar Bears lost their first game of the year Friday with a 29-27 setback to No. 3 University in Morgantown. However, the setback to one of the state’s top teams didn’t sway too many voters. In fact, the 4-1 Bears also landed one first place vote.

The change came at No. 3 where Bluefield moved up one spot from No. 4. The Beavers beat Tazewell (Va.) 62-27 to remain unbeaten at 5-0.

Point Pleasant, last week’s No. 4, fell to the fifth spot. PPHS, now 4-1, toppled Mount View by a 35-6 score.

Future foe Keyser remained in the No. 7 position. The Golden Tornado, 3-1, upended Jefferson by a 46-14 score.

Unbeaten Liberty still didn’t crack the top 10. The Mountaineers, an overtime winner against Grafton, is in the “also receiving votes” portion. LHS would be ranked No. 11 in the poll, while future Bridgeport foe North Marion is also earning votes from the panel.

Bridgeport will host Buckhannon-Uphsur this week. The Buccaneers are a Class AAA school.

South Harrison remained at No. 3 in the Class A standings. The Hawks toppled Moorefield by a 48-3 score and will host Tolsia this week.

On Tuesday, the WVSSAC ratings will be released. The SSAC ratings are the ones that determine what teams qualify for the postseason and where they are ranked.
