Changes in Top Five of MetroNews High School Poll in Class AAA Football with Indians Part of the Mix

By Jeff Toquinto on September 21, 2020 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport’s win over Class AA second-ranked Fairmont Senior did not hurt them in the fourth week of the MetroNews High School Football Power Ranking. The 44-33 win against the Polar Bears also did not help the Indians.

The Tribe, ranked No. 4 in Class AAA in last week’s standings, remained in the same spot this week. The win left BHS at 2-0 on the year.

While Bridgeport remained status quo, there was change at the top of the ‘AAA’ standings. In fact, for the first time in years, Martinsburg is not the top team.

The Bulldogs fell to Spring Valley at home by a 22-20 score. Martinsburg fell to No. 2 in the rankings, while SVHS jumped to the top spot from its previous ranking of three. Spring Valley ended Martinsburg’s 55-game win streak in the process to leapfrog to the top of the standings.

Cabell Midland was the team suffering from the loss by the Bulldogs. CMHS fell from No. 2 to No. 3 despite having a bye week. Cabell Midland will also be in a bye position this coming Friday as well.

Rounding out the top five is a future Bridgeport opponent. Musselman, who will visit Fairmont Senior Friday, is coming off a 43-7 win against Holidaysburg (Pa) and are 2-0 on the year. The Applemen remained in the fifth spot.

No other local teams or future BHS foes are ranked in the top 10 or the “also receiving votes portion of the poll.”

In Class AA, FSHS fell from No. 2 to No. 4 after its loss to Bridgeport. The Indians’ opponent this week, Robert C. Byrd, also fell in the standings.

The Eagles, now 3-0, fell from No. 6 to No. 7. The team dropped a spot despite a 41-0 win against Class AAA Preston.

No other local teams are in the top 10. North Marion and Liberty Harrison are both in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll.

In Class A, Doddridge County is the state’s top-ranked team. The Bulldogs beat Lincoln County 31-0 to move to 3-0 on the year.
