Despite Another Win, BHS Football Team's Status in SSAC Poll is Status Quo; Indians Remain at No. 5

Bridgeport moved to 7-1 on the year following Friday’s 21-3 victory at Wimer Field in Elkins on Friday. Today, however, the Indians remained in the same spot in the WVSSAC Class AA football power ratings.

The Indians are still in the No. 5 spot. However, the Tribe did pick up some ground on No. 4 Liberty in the power points.

Last week, Bridgeport had a power rating of 10.43 and the undefeated Mountaineers came in at 10.83. This week, BHS has a rating of 10.75, while Liberty – one of only three ‘AA’ unbeaten teams in the state, comes in at an even 11.

Bridgeport has a chance for another solid win this week. The Indians will take on 5-2 and No. 9 Keyser at Wayne Jamison Field on Friday.

Bluefield remained No. 1 in the rankings. The Beavers are currently 8-0 and have a rating of 12.25. Defending Class AA champ Mingo Central remains at No. 2 with a 12 rating, while Fairmont Senior stays put at No. 3 with a rating of 11.38.

No other local schools are ranked in the top 10. However, Bridgeport’s final opponent of the season – Lincoln – is currently in the playoff field as well. The Cougars, 5-2, are ranked No. 11.

The only other local school in the top 16, all of whom qualify for the postseason when the regular season is complete, is North Marion. The Huskies, 5-2, are ranked No. 12.

Two other schools are on the outside and looking in. Philip Barbour comes in at No. 19, while Robert C. Byrd is ranked No. 20. The Eagles have a huge home game Friday when they play host to home-city rival Liberty.

In Class A, there’s a new No. 1. And that team is South Harrison.

The Hawks made a big jump following their win against Sherman. SHHS can solidify its hold on the top spot, but will have to go on the road and upend 6-0 and Class A No. 3 St. Marys to do so.

The WVSSAC poll is the one that counts for postseason positioning. The top 16 teams make the playoffs in all three classifications with the final seeding determining who hosts playoff games and who is on the road.

BHS is also ranked in the top 10 in Class AA in the MetroNews poll. That poll, which can be found HERE, is voted on by the statewide media and shows how teams in all three classifications are perceived statewide. It has no impact on the postseason.
