Despite Impressive Road Trip and 6-1 Record for Week, BHS Status at Top of Class AA Poll Unchanged

Despite a 6-1 record during the week, where the only loss was a 2-1 setback to Class AAA top-ranked Jefferson on the road, Bridgeport didn’t pick up any additional first place votes in the MetroNews High School Baseball Power Rankings.

The Indians have been ranked No. 1 since the preseason. And during several weeks they have received all 10 votes of a statewide panel of sport radio broadcasters and sports writers from across the state. However, they’ve not been the unanimous choice for the last several weeks.

Bridgeport stands at 17-5 on the year. The No. 2 team, Chapmanville, is 21-3 and has the final two first place votes.

Rounding out the top five are Independence (19-2) at No. 3, PikeView (16-3) and No. 4 and Wayne (15-7) at No. 5. Liberty (14-4) and Lincoln (13-6) are No. 8 and No. 9 respectively.

This week, Bridgeport again maintained the lead with eight of the 10 first place votes. Among the wins this week were victories over Class AA-ranked Liberty (Harrison), Class AAA Washington (receiving top 10 votes) and two schools from Virginia as part of a Friday-Saturday four-game road trip.

Although no other local teams are ranked in Class AA, one local team continues to be ranked in Class A. South Harrison continues to stand at No. 2 with a 15-4 record and this week received three first place votes. Wahama retained the top sport with a 15-6 mark and four first place votes.

This week is the final week of the regular season for high school baseball. Sectional play begins next week.
