Despite Toppling Top 10 Foe, Indians Remain No. 4 in Latest MetroNews Class AA Prep Football Rankings

While it could be argued Bridgeport had the most impressive win of the teams ranked in the MetroNews Class AA top 10 this past Friday, the Indians actually lost a little bit of ground in the standings released Sunday evening. However, the overall top five remained the same.

Despite their 30-0 win over a top 10 Keyser squad, the Tribe’s hold on the No. 4 spot actually dropped by one point. Last week, the Indians had 212 points and this week BHS has 211 points in the poll that is voted on by 30 radio broadcasters and sports writers from across West Virginia.

Barring something unusual, Bridgeport may be in the same spot next week. The Indians have their bye week this coming Friday before closing their season the following week by hosting Lincoln.

Mingo Central, the defending ‘AA’ state champions, remain in the No. 1 spot. The 8-0 Miners have 22 of the 30 first place votes after handling Hebert Hoover by a 64-23 score.

Bluefield, who has the final eight first place votes, remains at No. 2. The Beavers clubs Oak Hill by a 74-7 score and will host No. 6 James Monroe. JMHS is 8-1 after a 48-10 win against Liberty Raleigh on Friday.

Fairmont Senior, the only team to beat Bridgeport this season, stands at No. 3. The Polar Bears made quick work of Grafton in a 49-3 win. Like BHS, Fairmont Senior is off this Friday.

The Golden Tornado actually remained in the same spot after the loss to Bridgeport. Keyser is still No. 9 this week with a 5-3 record. The loss to the Indians was the first this year to an in-state team for KHS and it hosts Frankfort this week.

Cracking into the top 10 is Robert C. Byrd. The Eagles, also 5-3, earned their way into the rankings following a 48-14 throttling of previously unbeaten Liberty.

The Mountaineers and Lincoln are not in the top 10, but are in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll. Liberty would be ranked No. 11 and the Cougars would come in at No. 12 based on the votes.

While no other local team is ranked in the Class AA standing, there is a big move in the Class A poll regarding a local squad. South Harrison, previously ranked No. 3 by the voters, have had a change of heart as the Hawks went on the road and upended previous No. 1 St. Marys by a 43-15 score.

The Hawks edged out East Hardy by taking 19 first place votes to 11. SHHS can likely secure all 30 votes this Friday as it will be on the road at EHHS Friday for its second straight road trip against a top three ranked Class A foe. East Hardy is 8-0 and No. 2 this week, while St. Marys fell to 6-1.
