Former Indians' Football Foe Nick Davisson of Fairmont Senior Commits to West Virginia University

Although not a Bridgeport High School student, a long-time foe of the Indians’ football team will be joining several athletes from BHS in Morgantown next year as a member of the West Virginia University football team. Fairmont Senior wide receiver Nick Davisson confirmed that he has made a verbal commitment to join the Mountaineers for the 2016 season.

“I was recruited by Coach (Tony) Gibson,” said Davisson. “I think he’ll have me competing at the wide receiver spot. I’m excited and thankful for the opportunity.”

Gibson offered Davisson preferred walk-on status at WVU. Davisson said he was more than happy to accept the offer.

Davisson was often a one-man wrecking crew for an explosive Polar Bears offense this past season. More than once he was able to complete big plays against the Indians and was often a pre-game concern of BHS Coach Josh Nicewarner. Davisson and the Polar Bears were the only team that gave the Indians’ a serious challenge in the postseason this year as they fell 28-20 at Wayne Jamison Field in the Class AA semifinals.

Now, players he’s competed against he’ll be competing with. BHS seniors Dante Bonamico and Elijah Drummond are also preferred walk-on students for next season at WVU, while Dylan Tonkery is already enrolled as a scholarship player.

Davisson said he’s not sure what he plans on studying at WVU. He will begin as a general studies student.

What Davisson does know is that he has work to do to get ready to play at the next level. And the next level is Division I and the Big 12 Conference.

“I’ve obviously got to be stronger and I don’t know if I’ll redshirt or not. That’s a decision for the coaches,” said Davisson. “I know I’ve got the speed, the hands and the athletic part – I’m comfortable with that – but I have to get stronger and I’ll work on those other parts of my game as well. You can always get better.”

Davisson said WVU was the only Division I school that made any type of offer. He said he was recruited by a multitude of Mountain East Conference Schools including Fairmont State University, University of Charleston, Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan.

Davisson's name can be found all over postseason honors in Marion County, the region and the state. He is a two-time Class AA all-state first team selection at wide receiver.
