Summer is winding down for those who play and coach fall sports as practice will begin in less than two weeks. For those who want a little bit of summer fun before they send their kids off to practice or before they have to man the sideline, the newly formed Friends of Bridgeport Football have a first-time event they believe will fit the bill.

On July 30 at Bel Meadow Golf Club, the first-ever Friends of Bridgeport Golf Tournament will be held, according to Mark Gray, one of the individuals organizing the event. The event begins with a 1 p.m. tee time.

“We’re trying to raise a little extra money for the football team and at the same time get the coaches and the administration out to, hopefully, have some quality and fun time with parents and others that are involved with the football program,” said Gray. “This is being timed to give everyone a nice day to relax before they start what we hope to be another successful football season.”

While the tournament is July 30, the current deadline to sign up is the end of July 22 or the end of Wednesday. Individuals looking to sign up individually or with a foursome can contact Cindy Drummond at 304-203-8772. In the event the deadline has passed, Gray recommends calling in the event there are still openings.

The event will be set up as a four-person scramble. The format includes using each member’s drive three times.

For those wanting to participate, it’s $50 per person. Checks need to be made out to the Friends of Bridgeport Football.

The cost covers more than just a round of golf. There will also be skill prizes, refreshments on the course and a dinner served after the tournament. Gray said The Bunker Steakhouse will cater the affair.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun before, during and after the tournament,” said Gray.

Gray said there are openings left if anyone would like to participate. They hope to have at least 20 foursomes compete.

Hole sponsorships are also available at $100. If interested, contact Gray at 304-641-0218. During the tournament, individuals can get two mulligans and two tee busters for $5 apiece. There will also be skill prizes awarded.
