In Span of 24 Hours, Bridgeport Hoops Player Nick Greely Receives Pair of Division I Scholarship Offers

In the span of less than 24 hours, Bridgeport High School senior-to-be Nick Greely went from having no Division I basketball offers to receiving two of them. Tuesday evening, the initial offer came in from Virginia Military Institute, while Wednesday morning a second offer came in from the University of Maine

“It was great and it also takes a lot of stress off wondering about getting offers,” said Greely, who didn’t verbally commit to either school. “At the same time, you have to keep working and playing hard to prove that I’m worthy of those offers and any more that I’m fortunate enough to receive.”

The 6’6 Greely is coming off of a season where he helped lead the Indians to a 20-plus win season and a Class AA state semifinal appearance. The all-state second team selection was also honored with a selection to the first teams of the all-Harrison County and all-Big 10 Conference teams

Although the offers just came, contact with both schools has been ongoing. Greely said VMI first saw him play with his AAU team – Ohio Elite – during a live period in Myrtle Beach. Maine saw him play in the second and third live periods, he said, in Augusta, Ga, and Louisville, respectively

“I’m ecstatic for Nick,” said BHS Coach Mike Robey. “I called him this morning as soon as I got word. I told Nick that this will be fun for him because, usually, we you get that first offers the others come along because coaches pay attention to who is recruiting who. He has two offers and there are likely more to come.”

Several other Division I schools have also shown interest, but have yet to offer. Greely said he’s been in contact with the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the University of North Carolina-Asheville, Army, Navy, Air Force, Albany and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Greely said he thinks his offseason work with his low post game has helped draw attention. Although capable of scoring inside, Greely has a solid mid-range game and is comfortable stepping behind the 3-point line.

“That’s what the coaches that I’ve talked to like is that they believe I’m versatile and could be a triple threat,” said Greely “I could score in the paint, hit from mid-range and hit for three. They liked that about my game.”

Robey said just how many offers that come Greely’s way will depend largely on how hard he’s willing to work. And the third-year Indians’ head coach said that hasn’t been a problem

“He’s been working all summer on the AAU circuit and the coaches are seeing him play and see his strengths. His biggest strength is that he’s a 6’6 kid that can stroke it if you give him any space at all,” said Robey. “The college coaches I’ve talked to, though, are more impressed with that he’s worked on playing with back to the basket. When you’re multi-dimensional as a basketball player it’s a good selling point.”
