Indians Back to Near Unanimous Choice as State's Top Class AA Football Team in MetroNews Rankings

By Jeff Toquinto on October 17, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Although Bridgeport’s impressive win over North Marion Friday didn’t make the Indians a unanimous choice in this week’s MetroNews Prep Football Power Ratings, the showing coupled with a loss by the poll’s No. 2 team did give BHS a tighter grip on the top spot.

The Tribe, No. 1 through preseason and the first week eight weeks of the regular season, stayed in the same spot this week after the 35-7 win against the Huskies. However, Bridgeport picked up a pair of first place votes and had 23 of the 25 in a poll of statewide radio broadcasters and journalists.

Fairmont Senior had gained ground on the Tribe throughout the first eight weeks, but a 35-24 loss at Class AAA Jefferson dropped the Polar Bears to the No. 4 position. Fairmont can make amends in two weeks as the Bears will host the Indians in Bridgeport’s final game of the regular season and game No. 9 for Fairmont Senior. FSHS has a bye this week.

Point Pleasant took over the No. 2 spot this week. PPHS was off last week and will visit Man this week; taking its 7-0 and record with it.

Mingo Central also moved up one spot following a 47-8 victory against Chapmanville. Rounding out the top five is 6-1 Sissonville. SHS upended Nitro by a 48-26 score and is at Logan this week.

Bridgeport’s foe Friday, Keyser, comes in at No. 7 this week. The Golden Tornado is 5-2 and unbeaten against in-state foes. Keyser is coming off a 50-7 hammering of homestanding Robert C. Byrd.

No other past BHS foes are in the top 10. However, Lincoln and North Marion are both in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll.

In Class A, South Harrison remained at the No. 3 position. The Hawks broke open a close game at home with Tyler Consolidated to capture a 57-39 victory. The No. 1 team in ‘A’ is St. Marys and that squad will be visiting Lost Creek for a showdown with plenty of postseason ramifications.

The poll that determines postseason positioning, the WVSSAC power rankings, will be released at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Check back to Connect-Bridgeport around that time for that poll.
