Indians' Big Wins Trump Pair of Losses as They Stay No. 1 in Latest MetroNews Baseball Power Rankings

Bridgeport lost two more games this past week, but it still didn’t prove to be enough to sway a panel of statewide voters to drop the Indians from the top spot in the latest edition of the Class AA MetroNews baseball power ratings.

The Indians are 12-5 and barely edged out Wayne for the No. 1 position. Bridgeport losses included being no-hit by Class AAA No. 4 and a 1-0 setback to Class AA No. 3 Elkins in extra innings in Randolph County.

The Tribe did have several big wins during a busy week. The Tribe topped Point Pleasant 10-0, Class AAA No. 6 Morgantown 6-0, Buckhannon-Upshur 6-4, Class AAA No. 5 George Washington 15-5 and Liberty 14-2.

Thanks to those wins, BHS received 4 first place votes and 88 points. Wayne, 16-3, received 2 first place votes and finished with 87 points. Elkins, who Bridgeport will host in a huge ‘AA’ matchup Thursday, is No. 3 with 76 points 3 first place votes thanks to its 12-2 record

Chapmanville is No. 4 with a 16-5 mark. Logan, who received the other first place votes, is No. 5 with a 9-7 record.

Only one other Big 10 is ranked in the top 10. Lincoln, who has an impressive 17-2 mark, jumped three spots to No. 7. Bridgeport is set to visit Lincoln today at 4:30 p.m. in a huge Harrison County, Big 10 and Class AA matchup.

No other area teams are ranked in the Class A standings. However, Notre Dame is once again just on the outside of the top 10. The Fighting Irish, tied with Tygarts Valley with 14 points, are both the first team in the “also receiving votes” category in Class A.
