Indians Boys Team Makes Minor Move in Latest MetroNews Power Index; Girls Make Significant Jump

By Jeff Toquinto on February 12, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport’s status in the latest MetroNews High School boys basketball ratings changed – but it had nothing to do with the team’s 59-57 setback to two-time defending state Class AAA champion Huntington Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.

In the most recent edition of the poll, the Indians remain the top-ranked team in Class AA and they are listed at 13-0. The reason for that is the poll was compiled and released prior to Wednesday’s outing.

While the Indians position at the top of the Class AA rankings is the same, their overall standing has improved. Bridgeport moved up from No. 8 to No. 7 in the overall rankings regardless of class.

Where they will be next week remains to be seen. The Indians will look to avoid back-to-back losses tonight when they travel to Shinnston to face Lincoln. The 10-6 Cougars are the No. 10 team in Class AA in the power rankings.

Huntington is actually listed as the No. 3 team in the Power Index. Musselman, a team the Indians are hoping to find a date to reschedule a snow game with, has fallen to No. 8 and are 13-3 on the year at the time of the poll’s release.

Poca (14-2), Fairmont Senior (13-3), Robert C. Byrd (12-3) and Frankfort (14-3) round out the top five teams in Class AA. The Indians have road games at Fairmont and RCB still left on their schedule. BHS will travel to Clarksburg to face the Eagles next Friday.

Notre Dame is still the top-ranked team in Class A. The Fighting Irish, who saw their scheduled game with BHS scrapped due to snow, are 12-1 and are ranked No. 21 overall in the standings.

While the Bridgeport girls team is not in the top 10, the club has inched much closer to be included in that group. The team is currently 11-7 (prior to last night’s game with Lincoln) and was the No. 13 team in Class AA and the No. 36 team overall in the state.

The team jumped from its previous spot of No. 22 in ‘AA.’ The Indians also jumped up 14 spots, from No. 50, in the overall standings.

The Cougars are ranked No. 1 in Class AA in the poll. Lincoln is also listed at No. 3 overall.

The MetroNews poll uses a computer formula that is based on the wins and losses of your opponents and how you fare against them to produce a rating based heavily on strength of schedule.
