Before the 2016 West Virginia high school postseason could get started, a member of Bridgeport High School’s team was recognized for his work during the regular season. On Sunday, a high school baseball Web site recognized Indians’ catcher Drew Hefner as its state player of the week.

The Web site, Prep Baseball Report West Virginia is the outlet that made the announcement. The site covers prep baseball on a nationwide basis.

“I’m really pleased,” said Bridgeport Coach Robert Shields on Hefner’s selection. “Any time you can get one of your players receive any type of honor, particularly a players like Drew that works hard and is dedicated, it’s a good thing.”

According to the site, Hefner leads the Indians with 33 hits this year and is second on the team with 23 RBI. He was also listed as the club leader in batting average heading into sectional play with a .429 batting average.

“This is a great example of what happens when you’re a tireless worker and aren’t afraid to put in the hours to make yourself better all year round,” said Shields. “All facets of his game have improved because of his work ethic. From his batting to his defense behind the plate to handling pitchers and even how he’s developing physically, just the whole nine yards, it’s all better.”

The even better news for Shields is that Hefner is a junior.

The site also says that Hefner drew 13 walks during the regular season and only struck out an incredible three times.
