Indians Continue Slow March Up Class AA Standings in Latest WVSSAC High School Football Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on October 03, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Thanks to their second straight fourth quarter rally, Bridgeport once again jumped in the WVSSAC high school football power rankings. The Indians find themselves ranked No. 5 this week following their 29-28 win against Class AAA Buckhannon-Upshur on the road last Friday.

The victory jumps the Tribe from the No. 6 position last week. The Indians, now 5-1, are the highest ranked one loss team in Class AA.

The WVSSAC poll is a computer-based poll. The top 16 teams in each classification at the end of the season make the playoffs.

Fairmont Senior remains at the top of the poll at 6-0. The Polar Bears are followed by the defending state champion Bluefield Beavers at 5-0.

Two of the remaining three additional Class AA undefeated schools are also ahead of BHS. Nicholas County (6-0) is No. 3 and Poca (6-0) comes in at No. 4.

Point Pleasant is the only other ‘AA’ team without a loss on the year. PPHS is ranked No. and is currently 5-0.

Robert C. Byrd has solidified its hopes of a postseason appearance. The Eagles moved up to No. 10 and stand at 4-2 on the year.

Several other teams are currently in the 16-team playoff field or close to it. Grafton, at 3-1, is ranked No. 13. Also, Bridgeport’s Friday foe – North Marion – will come in with a 3-2 record and a No. 18 ranking. A win by the Huskies would go a long way to helping them cement a spot in the postseason.

One future Bridgeport opponent is also highly ranked. Keyser is currently No. 7 and has a 4-1 record. The Indians will visit the Golden Tornado in their ninth game of the season.

In Class A, Doddridge County is 5-0 and tied for the No. 4 spot in this week’s poll. Notre Dame has managed to work itself back into the playoff field at 3-2 and are ranked No. 16.
